San Diego, known the world over for beautiful beaches and a historic downtown district, is also home to some of California’s most prestigious museums and exhibits. Many of these facilities are located in Balboa Park, a 1,200 acre urban public park. Established in 1835, Balboa Park was also home to the Panama-California Exposition, a 1915-1917 World’s Fair that celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal. Many of the highly ornamental Spanish Revival-style buildings crafted for the Exposition were maintained through the years and now house many of the city’s museums and cultural offerings.
