Attraction Type: Walk-through maze.
Location: At the main entrance, on the east side.
General Description: Come face-to-face with Universal’s famous monsters.
Will’s Review: My favorite time of year in Southern California is Halloween. Besides the presence of near-perfect weather (for me, anyway), numerous attractions in the area spring up with a collection of elaborate and immersive haunted mazes and eerie adventures. Alongside the great offerings found at Queen Mary’s Ghost Ship in Long Beach and Knott’s Halloween Haunt in Buena Park, Universal offers up an outstanding collection at Halloween Horror Nights. One of the more popular mazes, the House of Horrors, became a permanent attraction in March 2007 (the facility’s props were renovated for year-round use after the 2006 Halloween season). The building that is occupied by House of Horrors is known as “Stage 13.” Over the years it has been home to a variety of restaurants, including Country Star Restaurant, and walk-through attractions/exhibits dedicated to the most recent Universal blockbusters (“Chicken Run”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, “Van Helsing”, and “The Mummy” to be exact).
This year-round attraction and maze exists much in the same way as it does during the Halloween Horror Nights events (sans a few extra scare crew members). Some of the creepiest scenes from Universal’s horror films are recreated, including “Child’s Play”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Psycho”, and “Dawn of the Dead.” To add to the creepy atmosphere, various talent scares guests at key points during the maze (like the Halloween events, no touching is allowed from either party). While certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, the House of Horrors is a must-see for the horror film enthusiast, or those who just love something a little darker and sinister than your average theme park options.
Touring Tips: Visit anytime; this attraction is most popular about 30 minutes prior to closing.
Warning: Due to the nature of the attraction, it is not recommended that guests who have sensitive heart conditions or various phobias (darkness, tight spaces, et cetera) visit this attraction. Those sensitive to strobe lights should also avoid House of Horrors.
Family Info: Teens and adults generally enjoy this exhibit, while most seniors do not. In addition, small children and even preteens are frightened easily in this atmosphere; use heavy discretion.
