Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Hollywood Pictures Backlot is one of the main lands of Disney’s California Adventure. Designed to evoke the feeling of being on an actual studio backlot (complete with facades), this land is accessed via the east side of Sunshine Plaza. Many of the facades lining the main street of this land are designed after landmark buildings from the glory days of Hollywood. When entering Hollywood Pictures Backlot, the most noticeable of these nods to the past are the two large pillars topped with elephant sculptures. This is in homage to D.W. Griffith’s 1916 silent film epic “Intolerance.” This particular homage references the Babylon set from the film, which stood at the corner of Hollywood & Highland in Hollywood, California for several years. The versions at DCA are significantly smaller than the original set, but the modern day Hollywood & Highland entertainment venue was built with full-size recreations of these set pieces.
Walking into the land, the first attraction on your north side is Playhouse Disney – Live On Stage!, an exciting adventure for preschoolers based on the popular television block from The Disney Channel. On the south side you can shop for Hollywood souvenirs at Gone Hollywood and grab a bite to eat at Award Weiners. Just around the corner on the south side is the adventurous 3-D film, Muppet-Vision 3-D.
On the north side of this walkway, Disney Animation takes you behind the scenes of Disney’s magical animation process, while younger guests will enjoy a one-on-one conversation with “Finding Nemo” star Crush at Turtle Talk with Crush. Directly opposite the animation building, don’t forget to catch a show at Hollywood Backlot Stage or help get Boo out of Monstropolis at Monsters Inc: Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!
At the very end of the street, at the large sky mural, is Hyperion Theatre, currently featuring “Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular”. Things take a bit more of sinister turn, however, by venturing south of the theater and entering the world of the Fifth Dimension at The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.
