General Description: Step back in time to the 1920’s and watch vintage black-and-white, silent Mickey Mouse cartoons in a cool, dark cinema.
Will’s Review: I personally love small corners of the park where you can go and get away from the crowds and really just be all to yourself for a short amount of time. Such spots have slowly disappeared through the years, but this one remains! It’s not a place you’re going to spend a ton of time – not many people come to Disneyland to stand around and watch black-and-white cartoons, but this is one of the small bits of Main Street that actually does go back to the turn-of-the-century theme of the land. When the park first opened, Main Street was filled with the kind of stores you would see on a typical, all-American Main Street – including a real pharmacy, and even a smoke shop (you cannot even purchase cigarettes in Disneyland Park anymore). The Main Street Cinema remains as one small area that retains authenticity and has not been turned over to the merchandising department to sell even more t-shirts and Pooh toys. On a more historical note, the cartoons here include the earliest Mickey Mouse silent shorts hand-drawn by Walt Disney and his Nine Old Men – be sure not to miss “Plane Crazy,” the 1928 film that marked the debut of Mickey Mouse!
Touring Tips: Visit at any time, but do be sure to visit – you won’t find anything high-tech or mesmerizing here, but it is one of the small hidden jewels of Disneyland.
Family Info: All except the most hardened cynics will make even a brief stop in here; if someone in your family can really pass up seeing the 80-year old Mickey Mouse in all his youthful glory (back when he was voiced by Walt Disney himself), then why are you with them at Disneyland?
Variations: This attraction is unique to Disneyland. The only clone existed at The Magic Kingdom in Orlando (1971-1998); it is now retail space.
